READING AT HMS

As I am sure you are aware, Reading is extremely important to us here at Highfield. Comprehension and reading fluency will help your child in all aspects of life.

In all year groups, students follow the Accelerated Reader programme which is a proven tool for increasing reading ability. You can find out more on the school website and Google Classroom.

Additionally, the more frequently children read, the quicker their skills will develop. At Highfield, each child is given a reading record to log their reading sessions- we expect children to aim for 7 entries per week. Although we have several opportunities for reading during the school week, it is also essential that students read at home.

We would greatly appreciate your help and support in ensuring your child is engaging with this. They can read independently or with an adult, but either way we encourage you to discuss what they have read and to be involved in reading record entries (either by monitoring them or filling them in together).

Ideally students will be reading their Accelerated Reader book from the school library, however this is not essential for every reading entry- we encourage reading for pleasure.

Children's class teachers will also closely monitor their reading record, and rewards will be given to students for their engagement.

Finally, during the first two weeks of school, we will be administering STAR tests (to assess reading levels) and then allocating time for students to visit the library. Therefore it would be helpful if children could temporarily bring a book from home into school while they wait for their Accelerated Reader book to be issued.

Thank you for supporting your child's reading journey.

Yours sincerely,
Mrs C Bell and the Highfield Reading Team
